The "5-year" plan

When we moved into our house in 2005, we had agreed that it was a 5 year plan. In five years, the house would be painted and landscaped to our tastes. It would be done...

It's 2011.
The projects are never-ending, we have a dirt mound in our driveway the size of a suburban, It's dark out and we're still working... hit it.

Welcome to our journal about dirt, gardens and beer.

WHAT A DAY!

Another picture of the massive dirt pile.  But not to worry, the dumpster will be here soon.

A  picture of a new bed that was dug today.  What you see is a stepping stone area that will have creeping thyme.  When stepped on, it emits a lemony fragrance.  just to the right of that area is our raised butterfly garden.  The bed behind the cobble stones will hold lavender, which will have a lovely fragrance when you walk past it.

Here comes the dumpster.  Sunday we will move sod from the driveway into the dumpster.  It will be the first time in 4 years we have not had a dirt pile.

This is the start of the berm.

A little farther into the day after we have moved about 3 yards of dirt.  We had a total of 6 delivered for this area.

The berm is complete.  It is almost time for the install.  Most of the plants are in place, but we're still waiting for some grasses and fall flowers.  Later this year, we'll come back through and plant spring bulbs.

A picture of  HALF of the berm after the plant install.

Finally done.  We added the rock border around edges and planting areas.

Another planting area.  This one contains hens and chicks.

A fuzzy picture of the walkway area.  obviously Lex was tired and took a bad picture.  :)
WHAT A DAY TODAY WAS.  We are exhausted.  We got the berm completely done today.  Our newest project gave us two new beds, the "pine garden" and the "pathway".  It is unbelievable that this project was completed in just over 24hours.  We built, bought and installed in a matter of 30 hours!  We had many a passerby today stop and tell us that it looked nice. I was relieved, it was my first time i had landscaped anything since landscaping school.  I guess the professional landscaping course finally paid off.. Tomorrow is another long day of moving sod, but this time from the driveway into the dumpster. There is still a lot of work to be done here from more planting to mulching, but it is 90% done!  HOORAY for our first spring project.

After sod cutting the area under the evergreens we moved the sod cutter to the back yard.  At this time the machine died and we could not get it started.   Home Depot had to come with their truck and a couple of guys to get the sod cutter back.   They credited the entire rental fee!!!! --Lex
At 9:00 this morning the mad dash to dig a new garden began.  We started our day at Menards to rent a truck, only to go to home depot to rent the sod cutter.  Odd isn't it?  Anyway, we got the sod cutter home and began the cutting of our new "evergreen garden".
The dirt pile.  Notice how it is larger than the suzuki?

Some of the plants planned for the install.  In the background is the "stolen" rock... all 3 tons of it.
